Hormonal Intrauterine Device (Mirena or Kyleena)

A Mirena/Kyleena intrauterine device or IUD is a small T shaped device that is inserted (by a doctor) and sits inside the womb.

  • It slowly releases progesterone (a hormone)

  • Highly effective form of contraception

  • A Mirena can also be used for heavy menstrual bleeding and may reduce periods

  • It can stay there for up to 5 years but can be removed at any time if you wish to stop using the method for any reason

  • Fertility will return to normal after removal

Copper Intrauterine Device

A small device that is inserted (by a doctor) and sits inside the womb

  • A copper IUD is a highly effective form of contraception

  • A copper IUD does not have any hormones

  • It is not suitable for woman with heavy periods or strong period pains as it can makes these symptoms worse

  • A copper IUD can last for 5-10 years (depending on the device), but can be removed at any time if you wish to stop using the method for any reason

  • Fertility will return to normal after removal

Considering an IUD?

The first step is to book an initial IUD appointment to discuss whether an IUD is suitable and safe for you, and to undergo assessment for the IUD. Dr Overton will then run through the benefits and risks and discuss the procedure with you. This may involve a pelvic examination. You will be given a script for the IUD which you will have to buy from the pharmacy and bring with you to the insertion.

An IUD is insertion is a short in office procedure, which is tolerated well by the vast majority of women. In total, the appointment will be 45 minutes, however the procedure itself only takes about 10 minutes.

What is the cost of IUD insertion?

The initial consult cost will be charged at $155 (with a rebate of $76.95). The procedure consultation will cost $320. (with a Medicare rebate of $80.70).

Your IUD must be purchased from a pharmacy, the cost of a copper IUD ranges around $100-$120, while the Mirena/Kyleena is around $40.

Implanon Contraceptive Implant

What is an implanon?

An implanon is a small hormonal device, around the size of a match stick, which is inserted under the skin usually in the arm. It is a highly effective form on contraception that lasts for 3 years.

Considering an Implanon?

The first step is to book in for an initial consult to discuss the option and make sure it is safe for you. You will be given a script for the Implanon, which you will have to purchase from a pharmacy.  

The initial consult cost will be charged at $155 (with a rebate of $76.95). An Implanon can be purchased for around $40 from the pharmacy.

What is the cost for the insertion of an Implanon?

The procedure will cost $200 (with a Medicare rebate of $40.70).

What is the cost for the removal of an Implanon?

The procedure will cost $230 (with a Medicare rebate of $63.25).

What is the cost for the replacement of an Implanon?

The procedure will cost $305 (with a Medicare rebate of $95.30).
